NaPoWriMo #17 “Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water: The Fantastic Four!”
April 16, 2010This prompt from ReadWritePoem.org is to write a poem about something elemental, such as Earth, Wind, Fire, or Water so I decided to write about all four plus those they serve.
The water said, “I will quench your thirst
From arid desert droughts.”
The wind said, “I will give you breath,
When your air runs out.”
The earth said, “Lie down on me;
I will comfort you in my soil,”
The fire said, “Come close to me
I will keep you warm from toil.”
All four stood in time and space,
And waited for their buyers;
The ground hog found the Earth and said,
“Please cover me when I tire.”
The eagle’s wings were heavy and thick
And needed a gentle lift,
“The wind said, “I will help you rise,
From mountains and sea cliffs.”
The whale had thoughts of suicide,
But the ocean soothed his mind,
“I will cleanse your heart and soul,
And help your blubber to unwind.”
And the fire waited for his friend
Who would use him as his tool,
But mankind burned his own future,
With dirty fossil fuels.
Progress; not necessarily a good thing, depending on your perspective.
I like the laid-back approach of the elements, inviting the conclusion – mankind!
Great post.
Thanks, Stan. Mankind is the one animal that seems to fight nature rather than nurture nature as nature tries to nurture all.
Thanks,
~Mark
Unless of course you are near a volcano, tidal wave, tornado, or earthquake, but in the words of Monty Python, “Other than warmth, air, water, food, a brain, other animals to keep us company and the incredibly beautiful flora and fauna of landscapes and seascapes, what has the earth ever done for us?”
Mark,
The last two lines clench this together.Excellent.
Pamela
Those damned fossil fuels, when I started driving they were a quarter (25 cents) a gallon… and our earth was much cleaner… ;(
Thought provoking piece Mark…

Thanks, Pamela. I wrote a poem a couple of years ago called “A New Energy Source.” Perhaps at some point I’ll post it. We humans can be the most stubborn animal of all of Earth’s creatures. Too bad greed is in our vocabulary.
Thanks as always!
~Mark
Thanks, Rob. And now we’re sifting through the Alberta Sands Tar pit to extract more dirty fossil fuels for global warming and more devastation ahead. When will mankind ever learn?
Thanks as always!

The personification of the elements is so very poignant in this poem. I agree, man hasn’t been a good steward of the earth.
Thanks, Lori. For the irrational sociopathic tendency toward greed, man wants to conquer earth rather than live with her as the guardian of her health.
Thanks for dropping by! Happy Saturday!

The poem as I read through appeared like a beautiful tale, and I was grounded by the last two lines. I rant for hours about greed of man, and here you say it in two lines. Beautiful Mark.
The thought that went into the construction of this poem gives us such satisfying reading. Thank you. I too have written poems about alternative energy sources – a subject close to my heart.
An excellent eco-poem… I’ll admit, I was expecting some Marvel Comics references going on in here. But I think I prefer it like this.
ALL FOUR?!?!
Show-off.
Nice work.
Great commentary (you’re good at that!), and loved the tale-like way you presented this. Very poignant.
Thanks Uma. We can’t conquer that which we are part of. In the simplest words of Mr. Spock, “It is illogical!”
Thanks as always!
~Mark
Thanks, Vivienne. I wrote a poem last year called “A New Energy Source.” If there is a prompt that gets into energy. I’ll post it.
Thanks again!

Thanks, Joseph. Our culture instills in us competition when the Fantastic 4 should be about cooperation.
Glad you enjoyed it.
~Mark
Thanks, Dan. I was listening to the Fifth Dimension when I wrote about the Fantastic Four. We are after all on the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius

Thanks, Robin. Glad you enjoy my style. You have some pretty good poetic chops yourself!
